Central India
Easier to reach than you might expect
Bandhavgarh sits in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh, in the heart of central India, and is one of the easier tiger reserves in the country to get to. Roads run in from Jabalpur, Khajuraho, Katni, Rewa and Allahabad, and the last stretch is the best part of the drive — forest on both sides, village lanes, and the park’s three gates at Tala, Magadhi and Khitauli. Kanha and Panna are both a road journey away if you are combining parks, and coming from Jabalpur you can break the drive at the fossil park at Ghughua, near Shahpura.
By Air
Flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi and Hyderabad connect through the two nearest airports.
- Jabalpur is the closest airport, roughly a four hour drive from the farm.
- Khajuraho is about five hours by road, and the better choice if you want the temple town in the same trip.
- Private charter flights can land at the Umaria airstrip, around forty-five minutes away.
By Railway
For a tiger reserve, Bandhavgarh is unusually well served by train.
- Umaria is the nearest railhead, about an hour from the farm.
- Katni is around two hours away and is a major junction, with trains from Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.
- Jabalpur station is about four hours by road.
- From Delhi, the Chhattisgarh Sampark Kranti runs to Umaria and the M.P. Sampark Kranti to Katni.
By Road
The drive in is worth doing in daylight — most of it runs through forest and farmland.
- Jabalpur is about four hours, Katni about two, and Umaria about one.
- Khajuraho is roughly five hours, on a route that passes through Panna.
- Bananchal Farms is on an all-season road, so the last stretch holds up through the monsoon.
